As a Galesburger, there are a few things you should know how to do. You should be able to navigate the quiet streets after dark, for example, and you should also be capable of finding a proper American meal. If you need a little help with that, here’s a guide for you. It has everything from classic diners and barbecue joints to farm-to-table bistros and modern gastropubs, and it will be one of the single most valuable resources for your life in Galesburg.
Opie’s Bar & Grill
$ | (309) 315-2112 | WEBSITE

There’s not a lot that hits as hard as a cheesy, crunchy, smoky reuben taco from Opie’s Bar & Grill after catching some live music or a game in Galesburg. It’s the kind of bar and grill that elevates the typical with better-than-average food and excellent service, and their Big Mic Smash Tacos—layered with fresh ingredients and unique flavors—are crispy, a little spicy, and just savory enough with a side of fried mushrooms to make it one of our favorite casual meals in town.
Don’t sleep on their Cajun pork and rice or provolone cheese logs either, all of which are served with the personable attention of staff like Opie, Caroline, and Nancy in a welcoming atmosphere that keeps us coming back.
Applebee’s Grill + Bar
$ | (309) 344-7325 | WEBSITE

This is Galesburg, which means you don’t have to settle for a mediocre meal when you’re craving something familiar—instead, you can get a reliably decent dinner. Applebee’s Grill + Bar offers that relaxed, no-rush atmosphere where you can actually take your time deciding, and even if you’re tired after a long day, you’ll appreciate the moment they bring out those battered shrimp or that grilled salmon.
There are a lot of standout dishes here, so we recommend trying a few—something like the all you can eat, then also the salmon, or the shrimp. It’s right there on Main Street, in case that’s your next stop.
Packinghouse Dining Restaurant
$ | (309) 342-6868 | WEBSITE

Packinghouse Dining Restaurant is an American eatery in Galesburg and it may not be your first choice in town at 7pm—but when you’re craving something hearty and everything else feels too trendy, this spot suddenly feels like one of the best restaurants in the region. Grab a booth in the cozy dining room or a table near the salad bar if you’re with a group, and have some comforting meatloaf dinner, ribeye sandwich, or calamari.
The vegetarian options—with the ideal variety of fresh greens, pasta salads, and traditional toppings—are another solid choice. You can enjoy them any evening, because this place maintains a consistently welcoming atmosphere.
Smokin’ Willies BBQ – Barbecue Restaurant & Event Venue
$ | (309) 368-9099 | WEBSITE

This Galesburg barbecue joint is an undisputed local classic, and it’s one of the first places we think of when we want a hearty, satisfying meal with generous portions. (It’s open until 10pm most nights.) The smoky brisket sandwich, perfectly cooked ribs, and anything from the straightforward barbecue menu are still go-to items after all these visits. But don’t overlook the pulled pork and the flavorful house-made sauces.
Every time we come here, it feels like reconnecting with an old friend and picking up right where we last left off.
156 East
$ | (309) 351-7842 | WEBSITE

There aren’t many spots in Galesburg where vegetarians and meat-lovers come face to face. But that’s exactly what happens at this local eatery on the east side. (Their outdoor seating and convenient parking make it easy to stop by.) Unsurprisingly, this place specializes in Mediterranean dishes with options like the tenderloin sandwich and shrimp poboy. If you can’t decide what to get, go for the simple homemade kettle chips that come with every order.
We like the vegetarian plates too with fresh ingredients. Make sure to say hello to the kind owner who gives a warm welcome.
Lieber’s Boxcar Express
$ | (309) 343-4626 | WEBSITE

There are only three main categories on the menu at Lieber’s Boxcar Express in Galesburg, and this straightforward approach works in your favor when you want to do minimal deciding after a long day of chasing errands with family time. Your options are: some of the town’s best sandwiches, a variety of hearty soups, and baked potatoes—and they’re available until closing every day of the week.
Lieber’s Boxcar Express operates from a single cozy, rustic building—the Monday night special subs are just $3.99.
Jimmys Pizza
$ | (309) 297-4064 | WEBSITE

Galesburg has plenty of family-friendly dining options, and Jimmy’s Pizza near the train station fits right in. Open late for those craving a slice after hours, you’ll find exceptional pizza here with that perfect homemade taste. Iron Spike Brewing Company
$ | (309) 297-4718 | WEBSITE

Iron Spike Brewing Company’s converted firehouse location is a certified destination even on a Tuesday night. Everybody seems to be celebrating something over peanut butter and bacon burgers, and pulled pork sandwiches with homemade BBQ sauce. If you’re looking for a fun sit-down meal with quality craft beers, there is no better choice. In lieu of a standard brewery experience, they offer gluten-free options and dog-friendly service.
So get some Thai shrimp appetizers and eavesdrop on conversations about the brilliant Imperial Stout.
Buffalo Wild Wings
$ | (309) 341-1244 | WEBSITE

This bright, spacious sports bar in Galesburg feels more like a game-day party at a friend’s house, and it’s open until at least midnight every night (and 2am on game nights). You can get appetizers like loaded nachos and mozzarella sticks, but the main reason to come here is the wings. Most of them cost around $12 for a dozen, and you can specify how you want each order sauced (with mild, medium, or hot).
Our favorites are the straightforward Buffalo chicken with celery sticks, and the boneless bites with ranch, but save some room for the unique dipping sauce sampler.
Maid-Rite
$ | (309) 342-2426 | WEBSITE

Maid-Rite operates with the kind of timeless consistency that makes it perfect when you’re craving that 3pm loose meat sandwich fix and need to satisfy the urge with a Cheese-Rite and a frosty Green River float. Or, swing by for a 5pm dinner of homemade chili and pie with a few nostalgic friends while everyone else is chasing trendier spots.
Cherry Street Brewing Company
$ | (309) 344-4480 | WEBSITE

Galesburg used to be one of the best places to get a solid American meal. But over the years some of our all time favorites—like the old diners—reduced their quality, and the worst thing you could do for yourself is to show up to one of them hungry, and find it disappointing. Enter Cherry Street Brewing Company. The bustling brewpub is open with a cool vibe, and has friendly and knowledgeable staff including one of the owners, in case you want recommendations on their locally-crafted beers.
A sandwich here ranges from $12 to $16. Grab a table in the pleasant atmosphere, or hang out at the bar—we recently ate the popular honey mustard chicken sandwich with friends, and it was awesome.
Sidetrax Bar & Grill
$ | (309) 344-8193 | WEBSITE

Sidetrax Bar & Grill is a local spot in Galesburg, and it’s serving better burgers, sandwiches, and fries than what you’ll find at a lot of casual dining places. The kitchen stays open late, so we like to show up for dinner, a second meal, or a late-night bite. If the Big Al Cheeseburger isn’t sold out, get it. The generous patty comes on a brioche bun with garlic-parmesan fries, and the whole thing feels like the kind of hearty meal you’d want after a long day.
The bar area has TV screens for games, and the dining room is quieter for families, making it a great spot whether you’re grabbing takeout or settling in for a while.
Landmark Café & Crêperie
$ | (309) 343-5376 | WEBSITE

At Landmark Café & Crêperie, you’ll eat a bunch of dishes that taste like they’re equal parts comfort and quality. That might sound simple, but this farm-to-table restaurant in Galesburg serves exactly the kind of food you need to feel genuinely satisfied. Get the seafood pot pie loaded with fresh ingredients, an order of meatloaf that’s perfectly seasoned, and don’t skip the pecan waffle.
It’s worth the drive for families and food lovers alike—bring your appetite during the day for the full experience, and try not to fill up too fast on that delightful peasant bread.
Culver’s
$ | (309) 297-4140 | WEBSITE

On weeknights and weekends, the Galesburg location of Culver’s stays open until 10pm. This means that when most other places in town have closed, you could be eating excellent burgers, like the Bacon Double Deluxe, and a HUGE FISH SANDWICH that’s SO FREAKING good.
Most definitely get the root beer float, but there’s actually nothing we wouldn’t recommend at this counter-service American spot on Main Street, so bring a few friends, grab a booth, and round out your order with some crispy fries and onion rings.
Coney Island
$ | (309) 343-4990 | WEBSITE

You could go to some chain after that high school football game. (We get it, you’re hungry.) But you could also go to a century-old spot on Cherry Street, and order a classic Coney dog. From the team behind generations of hot dog lovers, Coney Island is located in Galesburg and stays open with that welcoming atmosphere. Most things on the menu cost $5 or less and will be worth the next day’s happy memories.
If you’re not into classic toppings, there’s also more adventurous hot dog variations, and a phenomenal chili that gets cooked on the flat top.
Perkins Restaurant & Bakery
$ | (309) 315-6130 | WEBSITE

Breakfast spots in Galesburg often feel rushed or generic—and there’s nothing wrong with those for a quick coffee. But if you’re looking for a proper sit-down meal to start your day, Perkins Restaurant & Bakery is your best bet. It’s a classic American diner, where most breakfast items cost around $8–$12—and taste excellent when served hot and fresh from their kitchen.
Grab a stack of blueberry pancakes, a banana nut muffin, and enjoy a cozy, quiet atmosphere that’s perfect for a relaxed morning—they’re open early every day.
Steak ’n Shake
$ | (309) 306-0238 | WEBSITE

Let’s be honest, there are plenty of reasons you might crave something simple and satisfying after a long day. You might question your judgment when you see Steak ’n Shake’s glowing sign across the street, because it’s not exactly fine dining. Better choices exist. But on many evenings, Steak ’n Shake is still serving, and instead of a fancy steak, you can grab a hot garlic butter burger, tucked into a soft bun with crispy onion rings on the side.
They’re open late most nights, and their classic American fast food should hit the spot without breaking the bank.
